So my oldest son is 4&1/2 and is diagnosed ASD(Autism Spectrum Disorder). And while there are at least 80 known manifestations of this the most obvious for Sampson is social interaction and speech. The social interaction doesn't worry me as much because he's in a play therapy group twice a week and goes to full day pre-school with children who also have special needs. It's the speech that concerns me the most. One year ago he barely spoke and knew maybe for or five words which made it nearly impossible to communicate. Within the past year his speech ability has exploded and he only stops talking while asleep. My concern is that he still can't ask or respond to questions, choose between two objects or distinguish between 'yes' and 'no'. My wife took him to our ASD specialist last week and asked her if he will ever be able to hold 'normal' conversations and she said that as long as he continues his speech therapy in school and independently it is likely that he will in a few years before he is 10. When I heard this news I cried tears of joy! To any of you on here that have children you'll understand. Bodybuilders have feelings to :headbang:

that's because this "autism spectrum" shit is complete bullshit....

they (government, doctors..ect) make up illnesses on a daily basis
and they do this to create MORE DRUGS....to "treat" this "illness"
or give these "speech therapist" jobs....do you ever sit and watch
what they do...??? its nonsense...

i cant stand it.

mine was diagnosed pdd before 2....asd at 4.....because
hes "not social"..BULLSHIT

he turned out PERFECTLY FINE.

anyway....there is NO doubt your son will be ok....its a scam
he will be fine......glad your excited though.....ive been down your road
listening to these doctors and the bullshit.....

I am truly happy that your son turned out fine and I hope that he continues to be. As loving fathers we all want the best for our kids. However I will respectfully disagree with you. I do not believe that ASD is bullshit. I do however believe that it is over-diagnosed in order to prescribe and sell more drugs to the public which is why my wife and i have already agreed that under no circumstance will we medicate him, for any reason. What all this has helped me realize is that a delay or disorder is not a permanent condition and can be overcome. Sampson will overcome!
Keep training and continuing to be that positive role model you are for your kid as I am for mine. Peace

this is why he will be fine.....

and this is also why.....THEY SAY..."he will be ok" also....they know
you will not give him drugs.....so this is their way of "backing out"
of the diagnosis....lol

the SAME EXACT ROAD ive traveled my friend....same thing...

its a scam...DO NOT fall for it.

:)

im not trying to be a dick either...

sometimes i DO try....but not talking about this...

Pm me if you want to know anything more about my
story....or if you have any other concerns about your son....
i can maybe help you get some answers...

the fact of the matter is....he is too young to be diagnosed....
hes sounds just speech delayed.....so they jump on this ASD..

My oldest daughter was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and we thought she might be on the autism spectrum. Well, she is now a freshman in high school and doing just great. She never had trouble academically but she is still a bit awkward socially. Her social interactions though have gotten much better. I think your son has a great chance of being like my daughter and "out growing" some of his problems. My daughter was on an IEP but was taken off in 5th grade. She is in all honors classes now and scores in the advanced level in all but math. Hang in there, things get better with your persistence. If you give him all the support he needs he will do just fine.

I agree about the drugs. The doctors here never pushed anything on us and we both feel that drugs are the last resort. Kids really are over treated on drugs. I have seen many on them in my classroom that are so drugged out that they just stare into space. It is sad. There have been some students though, I guess they were treated correctly, that do real well and their parents tell me that the difference is night and day after they are treated. I guess in some cases drugs do help but I think they are way overused!

I am so happy for you. Though I am not a father,I am a daughter.I can feel your deep love to your daughter.Happy forever.

For a while he was biting and hitting as well, this I knew was just normal (at least not totally abnormal) 3&4 year old behavior. Social interaction also doesn't worry too much either because, like Maldorf, he has made incredible progress in just one year. Maybe he'll be a bit socially awkward but who gives a fuck, as long as he is happy doing his thing. keep in mind that someone could be somewhere on the spectrum and u might not even notice because their symptoms might be commonplace and mild.

Very sensitive subject, so please understand I'm not trying to be offensive here.

I've done some reading and have friends in this situation and Tenny seems to be right on the money on this one.

These kids usually turn out just fine. Shy, a little quiet or maybe a daydreamer, but nothing to worry about.

The drugs are nasty and things go downhill once you start them.

That's great news! My boy had a bit of a speech delay, not asd. But I know how good that made you feel. I know my whole world revolves around my son. Bad father's don't know what they are missing.

I love helping my daughter. Just spent 2 hours helping her study for a big Biology test tomorrow. We had fun doing it. Spending lots of time with kids that have trouble socially helps them learn the social skills they need to be successful too. So its not all learning facts. Spend all the quality time you can with your kids.

There are many children who are legitimately ASD, to the point where they are self injurious, injuring others, totally non verbal and/or a combination of any of 80 other issues. Remember, it's a syndrome, it's not just one behavior or problem. I am a teacher and over the course of the past 13 years I have seen enough of it first hand to know that it is truly legit but certainly wide ranging. I guess we'll just agree to disagree on this one. Much respect.

You obviously know a lot more about this than me.

I'm glad your little boy is improving.

I too have seen it and it is why I thought my own daughter might have it but she was diagnosed with that other disorder. When she was little we had to follow a really set routine or she would freak out. It made life hard and thank God its pretty much gone now. We ate out on Tuesdays and Thrusdays and to this day we still do. It was so bad though that we had to always eat at the same restaurant each Tuesday and then another place of Thursday. If we ever switched which place we ate on either night she would have a melt down and just plain ruin dinner. One example there. Now she isn't like that. Kids learn coping skills, learn how to deal with their challenges. She still has a melt down every now and then but now its more like anxiety.

Yeah, and it sounds like your son is getting better too. It just takes time and lots of patience. As a teacher, like me, you are better able to deal with this than the average joe. Another great reason to be a teacher, helps you parent!

Glad to hear the good news, but never heard these over-diagnose before, anything unrigorous to kids should be to blame, you are wise to see throuh and not medicate the boy, anyhow, he feels better now and hope he grows healthly

With his name, Samson, how could he NOT overcome and persevere! :)

My daughter is dyslexic, which is vastly different than what we are talking about here, but it does allow me to completely understand the problems that can be caused by such things. Letter on the page just randomly reverse themselves for her and appear backwards.

She has L and R on her steering wheel to make sure she does not have to think about which is right and left - her brain keeps flip flopping them at random times. When split seconds count, there is no time to reason something out. We even had them on the wheel when she took her driver's test. The cop asked what they were for and she told him the truth. He said it was a great idea and appeared happy about it.

We need to have a label for everything.
