Torn Labrum, No military presses...

Guys and girls,

I tore my labrum about 6-7 years ago. I got it repaired and went through PT and so forth. Over the years, it has felt almost as good as new. I continued to military press, but recently had another shoulder injury. I was told that military presses should be taken out immediately.
Here is my question.
Can one keep nicely developed delts or even add size without a pressing movement? I have heard some never press, but it has always been a staple for me.

Thoughts..

Well

I would never do them....ever......hence your problems.......

Phil-Are you talking about barbell presses or all shoulder pressing? How about machines like hammer strength shoulder press?

phil i have seen you say this about presses a few times, what do you like to do for shoulders instead. i am figuring different lateral variations?

i have not pressed in years.. my left shoulder can not do it.. i now can not even do overhead extensions for triceps.. but, since having a shoulder surgery is out of the question i just use side and rear laterals.. i would like to do more but, it is not in the cards.. but, training chest heavy and back heavy should give quite a bit of delt mass.. finish them off with laterals and that is all you should need..

Well, I have seen some strong guys preaching militarys on line lately. I have seen Ed Coan do 400lbs behind the nekc. I read once where Phil said he doesn't make any trainees do them. So I stopped.

Now with that being said I think it is important to keeping mobility in the shoulder joint, so I may use some light to medium weight for a warm up but never press heavy anymore.

Seems to be going fine with me. I think if I wanted or felt a need to do them, I would just do a high incline bench...

i get the best anterior delt stimulation from the flat bench press.

i am in the same boat with my right shoulder. injured it a year ago when it was purposely pulled back and down. now over head extensions are painfull.... and my shoulder cracks and makes funny noises....

Had a torn labrum as well as a hills-sachs lesion and some rotator cuff problems fixed on my right shoulder. I can do DB presses but I end up with pain after doing them for too long. Presses with a bar are completely out of the question. Lately I've trained with no shoulder presses whatsoever and my delts have still come up nicely.

I have a labrum tear as well as another somewhere in my rear delt, 2 actually but forget the names. I havent done pressing in a long time, and when I do I just cause more pain. Luckily, shoulders for me are a strong point. I do read delt work after back and I cannot go heavy, basically 40-50lbs on the reverse pec deck nice and slow with a good contraction and usually some cable work after that.

For delts I train them with chest, just side lateral work dumbell and cable.

I feel the same as you...barbell behing the neck are a staple for me as well. I have to do them, but thats me, and thats my head telling me that :) My partner never does them and he has huge delts. He loves side and rear lateral movements
