WHY NOT EAT TALIPIA?

Good find, I didn't know that. I eat Tilapia quite often. My favorite is Bronzino (Sicilian Bass), I wonder how that is.
 
Well what if your supplementing with Omega 3's and fish oil anyways? R U saying the Omega 6 is bad for you, or are you saying that it's just better to get Omega 3's from fish in general? I fucking hate salmon and roughy

Talapia was soooo affordable and very tasty. I was eating a lot of it. Phil you gotta turn us on to a better alternative and a cheap one please.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., July 9 (UPI) -- Farm-raised tilapia has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, U.S. researchers say.

Researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., say the combination of could be a potentially dangerous food source for some patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and auto-immune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response."

Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin and the digestive tract, the researchers say.

"In the United States, tilapia has shown the biggest gains in popularity among seafood and this trend is expected to continue as consumption is projected to increase from 1.5 million tons in 2003 to 2.5 million tons by 2010," the researchers say in a statement.

Farm-raised tilapia, as well as farmed catfish, "have several fatty acid characteristics that would generally be considered by the scientific community as detrimental," the researchers sat.

The article, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, says tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and pork bacon.
 
There's lots of bad juju that goes with the farm-raised fish that I would stay away from - always go for the wild caught for the best benefit and more balanced omegas.
 
As long as you're taking a quality Omega 3 product on a regular basis, you really don't have to worry about creating a huge imbalance between the two

Edge, I think you might be onto something. ;)

I mean it will get to a point where nothing is safe or one will have to make choices that will cost him much, much more to get a 'healthier' product.

Now, all we need is someone coming up with a study telling us that chicken breast is bad for you. :D
 
That sucks, I eat a lot of tilapia. Thanks for the good info Phil but this ruined my day! lol
 
It shouldn't ruin your day, you can continue to eat it, just make sure you're taking in enough epa/dha on a daily basis

Seriously, the manpon has to be in effect whenever I eat orange roughy....that stuff goes right through me, literally. Any false moves and splat, not pretty.
 
i like fish but i suck at cooking it and it never turns out good.

so instead i use a cooking oil that i found at the grocery that is full of omega-3 fatty acids. its a canola oil, serving size is one tbs.

Isn't orange roughy high in mercury? I read it is, because it's a very old fish, living in deep water feeding on other fish, much like tuna does.

Everything seems to be bad for us to eat!
