If this isnt the appropriate place to put this I apologize, but wanted to voice my opnion where I can...
its a relevant one...
My name is Tim. I am a former Marine and I work as a security contractor currently in Iraq, and have been operating here (Iraq) or Afghanistan for the last few years. I am also a huge wrestling fan.
I read some headlines recently where John Cena supposedly went to blast on Steroid users (notably MLB) saying “they should send the guys to Jail” and also “I’m not only a guy who will say I’m clean, but I’ll beat my chest to the world that I’m clean,” …. “I have very, very strong opinions on that.
”
I’m really hoping he was misquoted or taken out of context, or it was just out-right made up that he said that… because I have a problem with that statement if he did. I’m gonna assume for a second that he did (say that) before I proceed, and if it turns out he was taken out of context I will gladly wind my neck in.
So John; your clean… really? You recovered from a neck injury and subsequent surgery in a very short time period last year. When you returned to the ring you had an extra 10 pounds of muscle mass on you. I’m not saying you did any gear… but c’mon dude.
In recent years media, politicians and several “experts” have gone after steroid use particularly in sports… demonized it… have even made it seem synonymous with crystal meth or heroin abuse… made those accused of it out to be junkies and awful people… and that’s just not ok. The banning/scheduling/illegalization of AAS for performance enhancement was based on ethics, right/left wing politics, personal agenda, uneducated propaganda… it was NOT based on any significant medical findings.
John you want to be a role model? Well for you to even say something like that is contradictive to being a role model…it’s outright irresponsible and you only validate the uneducated-mainstream stance on steroids. It’s just inappropriate.
So it’s illegal… but not reasonably so… I seem to recall periods of time in history when in Europe Jews weren’t allowed to own property, and in America when black people had to give up their seat on the bus for white people.
Or how about prohibition? That was law… but that wasn’t ok… how could this really be any different?
You want to be a role model John?? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror… go into the locker room and look at the performers to the right and left of you, steroids or no steroids aside…. You all are ALREADY role models.
There is something to be said for people who work as hard as most pro-wrestlers today do;
- Training hard in the Gym to keep themselves in good shape… not only for their appearance but to also prevent unnecessary injury to themselves or their co-workers.
- Out on the road most of the year working your tail off.
- Actually performing, in a dark match or while the camera is rolling…. Doing more than 3 wrestling moves….
Taking a solid bump now and again, doing “the job” when it’s time to put someone else over…
or how about outside the ring?
- When you all take the time to pose in a picture and give a hug to a special needs child,
- Competing on game shows and giving your winnings to charity
- Encouraging young people to register and vote
- Being some of the FEW celebs who even bother to thank the troops anymore… you all have even gone all the way out to Iraq and performed for us… you didn’t have to do that… we were touched, even the people who aren’t wrestling fans are repeatedly moved and overwhelmed by this act of kindness and selflessness you showed us when the rest of the world couldn’t seem to give a shit about us anymore.
John Cena; or anyone else reading this… that stuff I listed above… THAT is being a role model… that’s being real. THAT is showing respect.... having that strong work ethic…respect for your craft, respect for your fans. That’s being a role model, that’s what people can and should learn from you all.
On the other hand… getting on a self-righteous soap box/pedestal…. Boasting that your “clean”…beating your chest to the world that your “clean.” Saying steroid users should go to jail…That’s not being a good role model. The fact that you are “clean” has jack to do with it. When you say stuff like John supposedly said; that only serves to make you look like a hypocrite and could make you a pariah in your sport and amongst your peers.
Personally; I feel like my intelligence is a bit insulted… because I saw John’s interview with Chris Bell where he was singing a very different tune.
I’m not admitting that I take steroids on here because I’m making this letter very public… but I work in a job than can be very dangerous… no matter if I do it correctly or not. There are hundreds of people in line to take my job… It’s VERY competitive. It’s in my best interests to be in the best shape I can possibly be in, so that I can move and react quickly to keep my client alive, not to mention have an intimidating and strong appearance to deter a potential threat. I don’t get ideal sleep, I’m on the road a lot, I don’t get to keep the diet I would like to and I’m lucky to squeeze an hour out of the day for PT. My body constantly aches from having to wear 70+ lbs of body armor + weapons/ammo and other kit. Read between the lines.
Now… all my friends who are wrestlers…. Does that job sound at all familiar to you? Well that’s me… that’s the life of a bodyguard in Iraq… I couldn’t begin to know what it’s like to be a wrestler… but it’s fair to say we can all recognize the parallels between my job and yours.
So if I was taking steroids in the interests of staying above the cut… then according to what John says….
Does that mean I should go to Jail? Does that mean I should sit down and do some time? I say BS! I’m already doing time… and I’ll tell you all something else… if the guy working beside me is gonna be able to pull my broken body out of a burning up-armored vehicle (those doors weigh 400 Lbs) because he is supplementing his fitness with Steroids… then have at it… I think the better question would be ‘’why the hell ARENT you taking them??’’
And I don’t expect anyone reading this to openly agree with what I am saying or admit to anything… because if you are a wrestler or another pro-athlete taking steroids and working your ass off… you don’t owe me or ANYONE an explanation…
I want to thank the pro-wrestlers over the years who thanked me for my service as a Marine or high-fived my little brother and I’s hand while you were walking down the aisle when I was a kid…. Seriously…. THANK YOU. Don’t EVER be made to feel guilty or bad about yourself for whatever you do to put out… that cycle of test or pain killer you gotta take to get on with the show… I don’t only speak for myself when I say we appreciate the pride and hard work… and I will never judge you.
And just because some politician, some so-called ‘expert’ or John Cena says you should go to jail for taking steroids… that doesn’t make you any less of a role model…. a flawed character is a real person... and makes the person marginalizing you look like a fool.
Hey if John Cena by some chance sees this… dude the reason I’m writing this isn’t to insult you… it’s because I have enough respect for you and your people to point out the error in that statement. You are a role model. People already do look up to you so please, wind your neck in and exercise some better common sense next time you open your mouth... and let's leave steroids out of the equation. Steroids aren’t legal without a prescription…let’s leave it at that… out here we call it “big boy rules” and most of us; like you, play by our own set of those.
Thanks to anyone for taking the time to read this and thanks again for supporting the troops…. None of us give a shit if you’re on steroids or not… we love you.
