o.k. i have a pretty good friend that has been doing this lately, he is eating raw organic buffalo meat, that has been grass feed... have any of you ever heard of this or tried it?

hes been doing it for a few weeks now and seems to be o.k.

i searched for a info on it but i came up with was "raw meat for dogs", and nothing about human consumption ( probably for a reason huh?) just wondering if any of you have tried it or have any info on it?
thanks

I have heard of this but have no research to back up the claims. it has to do with digesting the meat faster. We do know that cooked meat takes some time to break down in our guts. Raw meat digestion times are much faster. I wouldn't do this though, it leaves you open to bacteria that would normally be killed in the cooking process, I don't think worms or parasites would be an issue but then again you just never know. As far as nutrients the buffalo meat is leaner and higher in protein than beef. I eat it here, cooked but reasonably rare. it is quite tasty.

Their is a vietnamese dish popular here in houston, which is similar to what your talking about. The dish consist of thinly sliced raw beef served with lime juice and vinegar. Supposively the acids in the lime juice and vinagar help to cure the beef.

A bit weary to eat it at first, but now I can't get enough.

whats it called?

I dunno know, its in vietnamese..haha. I got to ask my vietnamese girlfriend for you, she always orders it for me.

steak tartare has always been a high end meal at fancy restaurants, lime juice is usually used in the viet dish and also in mexican dishes. Any citrus juice can be used though. It's used alot with seafood too, by the name ceviche, by marinating the seafood in citrus juice it denatures the meat. Basically cooking it without heat.

That's some old school shit. My grandfather used to do that alot when he was into bodybuilding, but then again he used to eat head cheese and mince meat pies (the ones with actual meat in them).

You can eat raw meat, the human digestive system can cope with it, but its not the most efficient method of eating.

Look at your teeth in the mirror, do you still have prominent canines, or have they subsided? My canines are very pointy (i almost have fangs), yet i am somewhat alone in the people i know with this feature. Nothing scientific about it, it just helps illustrate the move humans have made from raw meat towards cooked.

Generally it is often a bad idea because of the bacteria and associated nasties in the meat, to me that is the main issue. Cooking, as mentioned before, tenderises the meat (which can be done other ways) which enables easier chewing and digestion. I would be interested in a study that shows a significant difference in protein contents before and after cooking.
But, as with all things, give it a go if you fancy it.

if you have high quality meat , like veal , there is nothing wrong with that . i love it. when going to certain restaurants , i'd start with tartar :D
even the 96/4 from walmart , if fresh , is good to eat raw . i mix some of it into my main meal , with onions :D

wake

The only raw meat I eat is sushi and my girl.:p
Wait is that the same thing?:D
LOL
Seriously I wouldn't do it, some nasty food poisioning could be his way a coming some time.
If I was a hunter/gatherer running around in a bear skin, I'd eat raw meat after I killed it!;)

I had a buddy that was into eating raw meat and he got tape worm from it.

When you worm cattle, it kills most of the worms but not all of the worms. I would not eat raw fish, pork or basically any meat for that reason.

Bacteria is the other thing to worry about. Heat kills the bacteria.

I feed my dogs raw meat....but I also worm them once a month :D

Mince Meat Pies are Awesome, especially made with Deer or moose meat, primarily the Neck. Lots of Apples and dates makes an excellent pie.

But why?? Why not add a bunch of yummy seasonings and cook it up? Steaks tastes sooooo good when you cook them, why would you not want to? Why not just blend a steak up and drink it? Would anyone do that?

That's what I thought.
You'll get worms.

yeah, the best flavor in the whole world is a grilled steak...why miss out on that?

ya i would also be interested in seeing some research on the aa profiles of raw and cooked meat, and cooking it ti different degrees (ex. well done vs. rare) i'll search for a little bit and see if i can pull anything up....

ceviche...

As a side note, ceviche is a wonderful dish served in south and central America using finely chopped seafood, scallops and fish or shrimp primarily and onions, tomato, cilantro and fresh lime juice. the acid in the lime juice actually "cooks" the seafood and you can watch the shrimp go from looking raw to the white cooked appearance. Very good stuff too. I think the Mongolians invented steak tartare and actually seasoned it in strips with onions and salt and transported it under their saddles to tenderize it. Pretty gross and a far cry from the tartare of today, eh?

Screw raw... Eat it while its still living.

I'm probably spelling this the wrong way, but there's a dish served at one of the restaurants in town called carrpachio.

It's VERY thinly-sliced raw beef tenderloin, served with olive oil, grated parmeson cheese, and pepper corn. Yuo then squeeze slices of lemon over it.

Makes my mouth water just typing this!
