Large Hadron Collider - the end of the world tomorrow :)

Its being fired up tomorrow...

The Universe started with a Big Bang – but we don’t fully understand how or why it developed the way it did. The LHC will let us see how matter behaved a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang. Researchers have some ideas of what to expect – but also expect the unexpected!

like a mini black hole that should be, in theory, ripped apart by earths gravity because, apparently, there is not enough mass in the vacuum to sustain it...

but no worries its not the Large Hadron Collider you should fear...noooo...its the:

Very Large Hadron Collider

that will take decades to build and that will be the end of days 100% LOL...most world scientists agree that theres nothing to worry about being that such colliders already exist on a smaller scale but the question begs itsef: at what point will they push the envelope too far and create a real black hole? take this Very Large Hadron Collider that sounds like exactly the kind of thing that is capable of pulling the plug in the bath tub that is our universe and all matter will go down the drain in to some other dimension in space and time...

if you see a scientist near you: smack him! LOL...Alex

I've heard about this thing and although the details of it are far out of my realm of comprehension (just how damn smart do you have to be to come up with these things?) the little I understand about it is fascinating. I didn't realize it had been completed, can't wait to see what they learn from it.

how the hell would you even begin to build something like this.

i mean look at how small the dude is standing there

These machines are extremely safe. in the cataclismic sense of safe. how they work is by using super cooled electro magnets at something like -250 degrees faranheight, and creats a moving magnetic field inside of a vaccum. in this vaccum sub atomic particles are injected usually protons or something smaller like bosons. the magnetic field keeps these particles from ever touching the sides of the tube. then by alternating from positive and negative charges the particles are accelorated to near the speed of light. once the particles are up to speed, they are magnetically redirected into the colider. once in the colider they either impact another stream of particles traveling in the opposite direction or a dense metallic plate like gold. the resulting impact is whats actually studied. particles moving at this speed have alot of energy. the products of these collisions is what physists are looking at. there is emense amounts of energy in the form of radiation and heat released along with(yes i know it sounds like something from star trek but it does exist) small amounts of anti-matter which usually quickly ahnillate. any questions?

wouldnt they turn into a large amount of radiation when they impact on a scale like this?

Tunnels like this, 500ft underground, stretching on for 27 miles, passing through several towns. This is a probably one of the biggest if not the biggest analytic instruments ever constructed. It will produce a stream of data at four million megabytes per hour. In other words, assuming everyone on this board had an 80Gb hard drive (~80 billion bytes), it would totally fill up all 20,000+ members hard drives in less than 30 minutes.

I think this and the Hubble are probably the most exciting things to happen in our lifetimes.

If we can stop killing each other long enough, the next 20 years could be very exciting.

radiation is one of the things they want from this. theyre trying to create an environment similar to the universe right after the big bang. in the moments following the big bang meaning .01 x10 (-100000) seconds. the universe was devoid of any matter, all there was was radiation and alot of it was in the form of heat. at 3 trillionths of a second old the universe expanded and cooled enough for the first bits of matter to form. this is the process they want to watch. the radiation wont harm anyone.

Well, within a hundred miles or so, give or take!! LOL.:D

HAHAHA yes this is data tranfer at it's finest. With fibre optics and lasers they can do some amazng things. I must say though this gadget is pretty cool. I love this sort of stuff. Who said smoke and mirrors was all fake?

Ouch I tend to agree with you. If all the world powers were not so preoccupied with occupation of other countries including their own and or blowing each other up who knows what all these great minds combined could come up with. I would love to see that.

For some reason this reminds me of that machine in that book Contact which later became a movie with Jodie Foster. Anyone else read or seen this?

It's really amazing when you sit down and think about the brilliant minds that these people have to come up with this shit..... and comical that some people are scared this thing will destroy the world... lmao

Well since we only have just over two hours left at the time of this post I will make my peace with all my bros and sis's here. It has been a great ride and i hope to see you all on the other side of the black hole. I just hope they have cool gyms there cause I'm gonna miss my training if they don't.

They are due to fire this bad boy up at 9:30am Geneva time today!!!
Providing there are no more gremlins to contend with we should all know in a couple of hours about one of two things.............
1. the end of our world as we know it or ....................
2. The beginnings of our universe as we never knew it!

I am casting my vote for number two!! LOL
Some very cool shit going on in Geneva about now!

things this amaze me. i remember growing up, watching all sci fi movies with my old man. both of us discussing the possible and the far fetched... i truly believe the human mind has no limit in what it can create.

i cant wait to see wht comes of this.

im in europe right now, so if this shit fails, im riding out on the first big wave.:st:r-wars

HAHAHAHHA if this shit fails bring a parachute to break the fall from the very deep black hole it is going to create!! LOL;)

i dont know what a "Hadron" is but it is my scientific opinion that anything called "Hadron" should be left alone...unless you change the R and D then its ok to touch :D

they tired to stop the experiment with a law suit at the "european court for human rights" and some of the scientists involved in the experiment even got death threats...well no black hole for now so i guess the test went well...Alex

i assume you meant to say for women to touch

not yet ....

the actual procedure that has the possibility to create black holes is not going to happen for several days yet.

This technology was discovered by Tesla in the early 1900's... Tesla gave up his research on a lot of projects because he thought if it fell into the wrong hands (both careless and evil) it could spell the end of the world.

Tesla was the man, most likely a prophet - most likely the greatest scientific mind of all time. After his death, the FBI raided his apartment and took all his scientific work.

I hope those that continue with the work Tesla started are careful

The big bang theory... that's funny.
