Has anyone ever seen the article Mentzer did in one of the bodybuilding magazines about keeping a journal ??? Because in his journal he kept his diet of when he was getting ready for on of his show (dont remember which one) but I remember him hardly eating any protein (under 100 grams per day) and his total cals were only 900-1200 every day...If someone has that article (or if its in one of his books) Please print it on here...

anyway, thought it was interesting on how he kept his size with such bad diet habits

I dont believe all of Mentzers theories on training, but two things I do agree with are how many people are overtraining, and I also do not believe you need an insane amount of protien to grow. This 3-400 grams/day crap is good for me when I'm 2 wks out from a show and hardly eating carbs, but other than that I grow fine off 200 grams a day, and I'm 240 right now

i remember reading some rant where he said cheese danishes were fine when dieting, as long as a negative caloric balance was in place.

the dude's training frequency was so low that he prob didn't need the extra protein anyway.

from a health standpoint i'm not sure if i would follow his diet advice though... didn't ray and mike both die fairly young from heart related issues?

Yea bro I agree with these two as well...had to learn the hard way

Mike was an advocate of carbohydrates, and didnt emphasize this truck load of protein theory like most do. 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight I think is what he recomended.

Mike died from heart complications, that were hereditary, but not helped by the fact that he battled a heavy addiction to amphetamines in the 80's, but his brother Ray died from another unrelated illness coincidently a few days later.

I remember reading it many years ago in one of the old Muscle Builder Magazines it was his diet from the 1979 O....not sure how accurate things are or were but from the magazines wrote back then the last few weeks before the shows they went really low on calories......remember reading well into the 80's guys like Mike Christian and Matt Mendenhall were on like 800 calories a day towards the end...

Mike told a lot of tall takes about his training, one of the old timers at the gym had a video tape from a seminar Casey Viator gave at a gym opening and he told everyone Mike do 2-3 sometimes 4 times as many sets and volume as he wrote in his journals and in his HEAVY DUTY program...

the thing about Mentzer diet was it was just very low cals. I mean some days were in the 600 cal range, and hardly any protein at all...I guess he had some pretty good genentics to get away with that...

I'm 5'11". I started at 158lbs of LBM and weighed 185lbs. In my first years of serious training I followed Mauro DiPasquale's Anabolic Diet using an average of 175-200g of protein per day and very high fat. I plateaued at 196lbs of LBM at 216lbs.

I firmly believe that at least for the first chunk of anyone's development, 1g per pound of expected LBM is plenty. Most of my growth came at 0.6 to 0.75g of protein per pound of LBM. Once I got to 196lbs of LBM I did need to increase my protein intake to 1g per pound of LBM to grow a little more.

I think this is why diet needs to be played with for each individual. if i only ate 200g a day i probably wouldnt exist...lol..compared to you im a little guy but just eating when im hungry im close to 500 grams a day. (yes i have an appetite that would make you think i had a tapeworm, and no i dont, i checked.) and even with that amount im only 185 right now at 5'7". im sure my total cals are really high as well. just goes to show some people have the genetics to pack it on and others fight for a single ounce.
