I am going to jump out of a airplane today for the first time. Its a pretty popular activity around here. One more thing I can check off the list :D:D
anybody from the board into this?

Last edited:
spent freshman year in college doing it...tandems don't compare to solo, it wasn't the tandem that got me hooked

...however it was the $$$ that eventually made me quit

I did and it was great!! I had a video done of it... lol Once you get up and put your foot out on the ledge its probably the most scary thing you'll ever see... Not to mention when you actually jump!! The rush is so amazing...

I'm going again in a few weeks. :D

125 jumps here :D

Wow awesome. Still high from the whole experience. And those people are addicts and crazy, all of them. Great times and I will definatley do it again.

i want to do an accelerated freefall so bad, but cant afford it right now. one of my best friends grew up on an airstrip and his neighbors/friends owned a jump center and skydiving business, he said he used to make 7-800 jumps per year with his team, those guys are fing crazy tho, base jumping all over the world..

I've never gone skydiving, but I've jumped off a 50-60ft quarry (into water obviously), which was pretty crazy.. It's high enough where you gotta wear shoes, and stay pencil straight going in, or you'll hurt yourself.. It was probably like a 2 second free fall, and long enough to get that intense rush and realize holy shit I'm still falling?! It was definitely a feeling like none other that I've ever felt..

I've actually wondered about a quarry jump like that, vs. skydiving.. Cuz obviously for the first 2 seconds, the feeling is identical.. But what I wonder is how skydiving feels after those first few seconds.. Cuz I imagine that initial crazy feeling must subside a little bit, where your stomach is in your throat, and after like 10-20 seconds you must kinda get used to it.. Who knows tho, I don't see myself ever jumping out of a plane..

bro that seems way scarier than skydiving to me! haha

Yea when I first heard about this place I thought no way would I jump.. But I kept hearing about people going up there, and I finally went with a bunch of kids.. I didn't jump till I saw them go first and survive, lol.. But yea it's a quarry that was in use 50+ yrs ago.. When you walk thru the woods you see this ancient excavation equipment.. It's like this ~100 ft deep crater in solid rock the size of a couple football fields, and thru the past 50 yrs it's like half full of water now, it's gotta be at the very least 30 ft deep.. But thinking back, I kno it was definitely risky.. There's definitely stolen cars in there and who knows what else.. If any piece of debris ever floated up a little bit and you hit it jumping in, you'd be done.. I have heard of a few people dying at various quarries.. I think I actually heard something a few yrs back about them wanting to drain a quarry around here cuz of someone dying..

I love it. Cant get enough. Sitting in a hanger for hours in full gear suck, but there is no feeling like jumping. AIRBORNE!

I weigh too much for the UK restrictions :(

I will be doing my first this month too

Always wanted to do it; never have. Funny enough, I just watched Point Break for about the 100th time the other night. I love the part where they jump and go swimming. That just seems like a good time all the way around!!

big $ though. Way too poor right now.

I have jumped off fixed objects also. That imo is WAY MORE FUN than skydiving. Skydiving is great fun though. So its comparing to REALLY fun activities :D

I jumped off a 450' building (myrtle beach, NC if you know those buildings) while it was under construction (at night like 3am we climbed over the fence and jumped in through a window (which was missing the glass) and walked up the unfinished stairwell. We got out to the top (which was basically just steel girders at this point of the construction) and walked out to the edge. This building is right on the beach. I remember seeing little lights out at sea (fishing boats I guess). I walked out onto a steel beam (like a plank kinda!) and looked down. swirling picture of gravity basically (haha).

3...2...1...CYA (jumps)

1.5 second delay and threw my pilot chute (like a little miniature parachute basically, the part of a base rig that pulls the canopy from the bag, thus deploying the rig)

good onheading parachute and a nice landing in the sand next to the ocean!

What a rush!

I also later jumped off a 1,200 foot TV antennae. That was alone at 4-5am. It was JUST BARELY light from a sun that had not even shown itself. I jumped and started tracking away (basically imagine a person straightening out and arching a little bit to start 'planing' through the air horizontally away from the TV tower). I remember taking a long delay...felt like I almost got to terminal I delayed so long! (terminal velocity = fastest speed that you can freefall at in a basic tracking position like ~125mph down to the ground and ~50ish mph forward speed). I also remember hearing the guy wires whizz by me as I started tracking away. They were like a very loud quick sharp WHIRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr

Any one of those guy wires would have sliced me in half for sure!

Most.Adrenaline.Ever.

Knuck my man... jumping out of a perfectly good airplane? I mean, really? Why?
Bro you have wonderful children, dont let them end up seeing daddy smashed on the ground like a fly on your windshield.
My train of thought is like this... why jump out of a perfectly good airplane and on top of they why would you PAY to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? I see all these guys with Bill Gates money, like Richard Branson (Virgin airlines and records owner/founder) who are worth billions take up sky diving and bungee jumping out of hot air balloons and all i can thinks is they have become so board with life, they have done everything and been every where over and over so many times that regular life is just to boring to them so they have to risk there lives to get a thrill out of life now.
I hope i am never that rich. I would be happy just watching my child grow up happy.
So, if you really like jumping out of planes... then as a friend i am asking you to wait till your a billionaire and im added into your will... then jump away ;)

I guess i will never be that rich, so i will stick to the safety of taking my son fishing on a 6ft high bank by a pond somewhere.
Wish you luck with that bro, but you got bigger balls then i do.

Btw Knuck or Psyt - whats the average cost of jumping tandem and solo? I mean, after you get to where your really good and want to do it on a weekend type deal how much would it cost for a day out with your bros, jumping out of planes? Seems like it would cost allot adding in the airplane rental, pilots, ect.
Just curious.

Bro,
Myrtle Beach is in South Carolina. What building was it you jumped off of in Myrtle? I lived there for 14 years but i love North Carolina beaches (Topsail) allot better because there allot cleaner.
Btw.. im dumb to this kind of thing but what is the minimum height you can jump off of buildings or what not and the parachute still open correctly?

Hats off to you and anyone else because i could never do that shit.

once you get your license and can jump on your own or with friends (skydiving is a self-governed activity like SCUBA), the cost of a jump ticket is not that much (10-20 dollars depending on altitude they take you to (my favorite DZ used to regularly take us 15,000' AGL).

I am very poor my entire life (because I have a penchant for not working :D). I ended up working for the dropzone packing student parachutes. That was a cheap way to do it, but I already had experience.

hehe thanks for the hats off :)

the building I jumped off of was going to become a hotel iirc. Right on the beach.

Minimum height you could safely do a base jump would be around 120'. You'd static line a jump that low probably because there's not enough time to throw your PC yourself (static line is where you connect some cord that breaks under a certain weight directly to your pilot chute line and fix the other end to the object like a railing...then when you jump off you're literally tied to the object and that deploys your parachute VERY fast basically ripping it right out of the bag right away...then the static line breaks and you continue falling while your parachute opens above you...somewhat dangerous).

Ideally around 300' the fun starts because then you can jump and take a delay (wait a second or two to throw your PC so you get more freefall time).

The really cool thing about BASE jumping is that you go from zero to very fast all of a sudden, but the first part of the jump is a wild feeling, you have that moment of no-gravity where you're at the peak of your jump off, then you start falling and that is a really cool feeling to experience). ::tar-wars

Damn bro, you know your shit.
I admit, i would love to be able to do the shit you do but i could never make my self take that step.
I always wondered what that rush would feel like but i will never know because i am a CHICKEN SHIT when it comes to heights. I will fight any mother fucker and win or lose go back and fight again, i have driven 192mph on my jacked up Honda CBR 1000 and i have raced down I85 in my corvette at speeds that averaged 140+ but i could NEVER jump out of a fucking plane or anything else for that matter. Hell i almost puked just stepping out of the elevator in the Sears towers and had to get major drunk to walk out on the Stratosphere in Vegas. FUCK JUMPING man.
You got iron balls. Knucklehead as well. If it means your more of a man then me because you do that then i bow down, you are the man. I wont ever be then.
But hey, to each his own right? If thats your thing then at least you have found something in life that takes you to that level most people never see.
Good luck either way man.
