Protein confusion!

Anyone else completely overwhelmed by the choices in protein?

I find that I am dumbstruck everytime I go to order a "custom blend", and unsure when I pick a pre-mix.

Franky, I don't know the difference between whey concentrate, isolate, blend, cold filter, ion exchange, etc. I had read some technical descriptions, but I'm unsure how that translates into use, bioavailability, taste, texture, and consistency in a shake!

Personally, I like Isopure's apple RTDs... they're clear and refreshing (try drinking one of EAS's "mud" thick shakes on a hot day).

I also like Musclemilk's RTD Chocolate Malt... I actually look forward to drinking one.

That being said-- I rarely drink RTD's... not enough protein and costs are extreme. However, I am tired of buying 5-10lbs of protein that I have to choke on for an entire month because I took a gamble on the taste.

What do you guys order from True Protein? (Besides LBAs... which are frigging awesome)

I used to be sold on Isopure til I tried TP. Ive done the LBA's, still do, but for powder I love their egg white protein flavored in Dutch chocolate. I ususally make a shake with liquid egg whites.

Right now I am trying their beef protein isolate and it gives me the shits, BAD, when I mix it with water. If I do it with liquid egg whites, it doesn't. I also have been using it to flavor my grits. I use the chocolate on that as well. I really can't see myself buying from anyone else.....even if I was desperate.

Whey raises Holy hell with my sinuses. Since I switched to a different type of protein, and likely a better product overall, I haven't had the same issues.

Team Skip w/Premium Dutch Fudge.

Guys will go overboard with the custom option and get 5% of this, 5% that when it really doesn't matter all that much. Keep it simple with a nice blend that will taste and mix good so you aren't missing meals or dreading them.

Team skip is great, i have some of it now and love it. Basically a good protein isolate is what i like. Isolate is easier on my stomach. Cold filter isolate is really good for my digestion. I have also tried ON and Dymatize and liked both. But i also like a new one i tried and that was Whey To Build Muscle. All of these are good proteins.

what does the whey do to your sinuses???? just wondering....

The Best protein that i've had is the True Protein's whey isolate cold filtered... amazing, and also great on my stomach...

After years spent trying every supplement under the sun, including protein powders in its many forms, I can honestly say that as long as your daily intake is on the high side (quantity obviously varies from an athlete to another), there's absolutely ZERO difference muscle gain wise between all the different kinds of whey... none!:eek:

The only cases it may have a SLIGHT impact is when you're on a carb reduced diet (a good isolate is useful then) and/or if you're lactose intolerant or get bloated easily from powder ingest... mainly due to the astronomical amount of fillers added... :(

If you really want to play it safe on the digestion and very low carbs issues, just buy some SYNTHEPURE from Synthetek... it's ONLY WPI... no fillers no nothing... the purest form of protein you can find. :)

very good post....i trust your input, but i think it is a mental thing with me. for example if im dieting and one of my meals is a protein shake with EVOO or mac nut oil, if i dont use the best (more expensive) protein available i feel like im cheating myself. i am reassured by the higher quality proteins. but if im bulking and daily protein intake is higher, i have no problem getting a decent concentrate like ON 100% whey, which i have no prob digesting. ive often suspected what you wrote to be the truth but was scared to "risk" it while dieting.

Oh don't worry, I've been guilty of that one too... quite often actually!! :p;)

exactly, so eat salmon chicken milk instead... Money spent on supps is money that could have been spent on real food!!

there is no magic powder that will make you big, theres just hard work, good food and steroids < This is the only thing that will allow you to go beyond your max....

I stick with TP's cold filtered whey isolate, and also their micellar casein.

Banana Bash and Chocolate Coconut are both VERY good flavors.

So you're saying there's no place for protein powders?

Love the Team Skip protein. I went with Cookies n Cream though.

Synthetek's ISOPURE is damn good too, pure as hell...and add some Nutella to the mix. You'll be sipping on it all day long.

Druss-I dont think anyone on here said anything about expecting magic results. Powders are used for quick and easy protein. Not expecting anything magical just protein.

What's the difference between their whey isolate and whey concentrate?

The isolates filter out the vast majority if the fat/carbs left over from the concentrate. Leaves a much "cleaner" product and is imperative for guys with lactose intolerance.

As far as which process is best that's up in the air... pick the one you like and don't worry too much about subfractions in my opinion.

I appreciate the feedback!

What mixes the thinnest drink? How does the Isopure RTD stay clear?

I want to order something equivalent from True Protein.

Also-- Anyone just order flavor packs and bulk powder? so you can have something other than "chocolate" for 2 months?

The whey protein isolate ion exchange is as thin as water. It is definitely the thinnest.

What's better mixability, ion-exchange or cold-filtration? I just ordered a few pounds of cold-filtration to see if it will be better than the ultra-filtration. I hope ion-exchange wasn't what I should have ordered.

I went through a few pounds of their ultra-filtration and the mixability was nowhere near as good as other protein powders I have used such as Optimum Nutrition and Designer Whey Protein Blitz (no clumps, smooth as Nestle's chocolate milk with just a spoon).

I tried stirring two scoops of the ultra-filtration with a spoon and it was a mess. Thickest, clumpiest drink ever. I basically had to chew it. Not pleasant. In a shaker cup it's much better going down, but there's still usually several large clumps that I just slurp down. And there ends up being quite a bit of wasted protein on the inside of the cup.

I have lactose issues and even some of the companys that claim they are lactose free or whey isolate i still have problems and have to take things like probiotic and papya extract. The only isolate that i have no negative side effects is natures best isopure, expensive but worth it for me.
