How many of you guys have tried these with no calf block, rack, smith or anything to catch you, just weight across the shoulders and up on your toes you go. I think it builds a level of development similar to using dumbells for upper body work because you have to focus on balance much more than if you did them with safety in mind. I haven't had a mishap yet. It's pretty cool when you can balance on the balls of your feet with 300+ Lbs. for reps.

I do them the same way...but not quite as heavy haha...anyways if i were to ever even attempt to do them completely free like that i would at least get in a power rack and set the safety bars just under shoulder level to be safe.
why not do them in the power rack with the bars set very high. Then all you would need to do is get under the bar and do a partial back squat to get into the position and then raise it. Seems safe to me.
What I like about having no catch is it forces you to focus on performing the exercise flawlessly much more than if you knew you would be safe if you happened to fail the movement. It just seems to take the entire experience of the exercise to another level, hopefully not to a level of a hospital, ha.
