Using Insulin to Bring on Ketosis

I have been succussfully using the Anabolic Diet for some time now, my question is

"If you were to use the small 2iu insulin shots every 3 or 4 days without having a carb day, would this help to keep you deeper ketosis.

I find that after a few days (according to ketostix and how i feel), my body seems to slip out of ketosis, obviously from converting protein to glucose in the state of zero carbs. I in genal eat 300g of protein per day and 150-200 g fat every diet day. The only carbs I get is from broccoli, spinach and cabbage which i mainly eat for the fibre. So should be getting about 2500-3000cals per day, 1200 from protein and 1300-1800 from fats (olive oil, flaxseed oil, fish oil, nuts, whole eggs and some red meats)

Yes.

Also, to get into ketosis within 8 hours, take 3IU of insulin every 4 hours. YOu won't feel any detrimental effects and you will hit ketosis the same day instead of 2 or 3 days later.

bro, dont rely too much on ketostix to gauge how deep in keto you are.

if those are your only carb sources, then you will be so deep into ketosis that if you were to follow such a diet for say 2-3 weeks without a carb re-feed it would probably take at least a day or two of solid eating to fill back out again (i went total keto for 8 weeks- the last 4 with no carb re-feeds at the end of each week and it took me almost 3 days to fill out...)

i wouldnt think you'd be in any danger of slipping of of keto due to gluconeogenisis. your probably so deep right now it isnt funny, depending on how long you've been running no carbs.

like Big A said, insulin will work in dropping you into ketosis in 24 hours at the start of your diet, but i dont think you need it, imho.

best of luck.

Yes I read this and have tried this also, I never have any problems even with 4iu or 5iu every 4 hours. I was just curious about keeping in ketosis if I start to lower my fats and up my protein closer to my show. Some people say they fall out of ketosis quite easily, and the ketostix are hard to use accuratly. I would prefer to eat 50-100g fats per day at the most to keep calories down, have more protein and be able to have a carb up meal once every 4th day rather than once per week. Insulin is such a versitile drug, in the offseason it makes me huge and strong and now Im finding out how to use it to get lean, I love it.

I found that at the start of this diet I could stay very full by eating lots of fats but my weight loss was quite slow. I started lowering my fats and upping protein and lost more weight but got fairly depleted and weak. Trying to find a balance.

I find the low carb and high unsaturated diet works well for me as I tend to hold alot of water on hight carbs and causes my waist to get out of control. Insulin sensitivity? Im not sure, still trying to figure my body out.

Thanks bro, Damn 4weeks without any real carbs!! Thats doing it tough, respect that. I agree that ketostix are hard to use accuratlty especially when drinking lots of water and because training and cardio uses up the ketones. Sometimes I have the other indicators like acetone breath and sweat but no often.

Before you jump in with the slin, I would 1st eliminate as much of those vegetables as you can and use a good fiber supplement but even before that you should look at your fluid intake, if you drink a lot of water during the day you may be diluting the ketostix.

Also the time of day you pee on the stix are important too... what I would want you to do is test it like this... keep the fluid intake on the low end toward the end of the day, then 1st thing in the am when you wake up pee on the stick, most likely you will show you are in ketosis.... if that doesnt work then you can do some cardio to get back into ketosis...

I used to have it down so good that I could do my carb up day and be back into ketosis that night after cardio or the next morning. Also do a big cardio session when you are done with the carb up day to help you get back into ketosis.

One last option is to have a really fatty meal like 2 burgers with loads of cheese and mayonnaise and see if they helps kick start you back into ketosis.

Lots of ALA helps too.

wich type of insulin fit best for this protocol?

Sorry to bumb up and old thread, I used to do this a decade ago but can't remember the details.

Is the insulin taken fasted? What kind of slin is best for this purpose? Anybody use this protocol please advise?

I eat keto for mental and physical health but like having a refeed once a week and normally takes me a about 48hours to get back into keto with fasting and cardio.

Why do you want to take insulin to reach ketosis faster? What's the purpose or advantage?

just fast for 24 hours
Or go to the gym and do a depletion workout or just exercise hard.
How fast you get into ketosis means fuck all nothing.

@b-boy I hear you mate, im on ketogenic therapy probably for foreseeable future for depression, anxiety, energy etc etc

I still want to eat carbs once a week or once every 14days, they also really help with athletic goals.

It takes me about 48hours to get to level of ketosis where I want to be. That's with fasting and cardio, I love fasting no problem.

Weird thing is that my body/brain doesn't tolerate caffeine after two days of glucose burning, I go into withdrawal same day, sometimes just a few hours after, in ketosis never.

But I found the info I needed on an other board, will try and report my findings here.

I will try doing 60min cardio tonight and tomorrow morning and will do glucose readings before and after and next time with insulin and compare.

This may be the post you found but if not @concreteguy had a protocol for keto with Lantus - https://www.anasci.org/threads/lantus-keto-protocol.42518/

2-3 humalog or humalin-R every 3-4 hours work wonders.

I use to cheat on my ketosis, the above works perfectly. If using actarapid use 1iu every 3 hours
