IMHO
Charcoal/wood taste best, but gas is a lot more convent.
I have a small steel box that I put wood chips in to add wood smoke to my gas grill.

I have an offset charcoal which gives the best flavor but requires your full attention. I have a smokin tex electric smoker which does a nice job and is very easy to use. Lastly my favorite smoker is a Cameron cooktop smoker. You can get one at Camerons.com. I recommend using it on the sideburner of your grill if you have one, but it can be used indoors if you have to. Makes great baby back ribs for your cheat day!!
