I am not super crazy strong like some of you monsters, but I was feeling good today. Usually dont exceed 405 for work sets on squats, but today when warming up everything felt good. 315....light, 405...light....so I loaded up 500. Hit it for 10...freeweight, no wraps, no spot... to parallel. Haven't done or even tried that in years. Iabadman will be happy to know that it was Kinda fun! :D Look out boys I will grow me some wheels yet!

Seems like the Hernon Basic Movement Principle is working ok for this old duffer!

congrats SZ. Thats a pretty big number, especially for 10. I seem to have a mental block myself, maybe you can offer advice lol. I can nail 405 slightly below parallel for 10, but once i put on 455 im scared of the weight and the way it feels when i unrack it, i can barely get 3. How do you guys step out of that Rack with a heavy weight like that, feel every muscle in your back tensing, feels like my legs can handle it, but i guess my mind is afraid of it.

LETS TRANSLATE THAT INTO A PRO CAREER SOON. YOU DESERVE IT AND YOU WOULD BE UP THERE WITH THE TOP 10-15 PROS WITH THE WAY YOU LOOKED LATELY.

I am all for that one! I appreciate the encouragement, means alot to me coming from you! Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated!

Heres a tip TP4U

First of all congrats Szona, thats good weight for reps for anybody.

2 things TP4U,first of all get used to unracking big weight.Put 5 plates/5 plates and quarters on and unrack it.Walk back with it,get used to the feeling, hold it there for alil bit then rack it.You do do this a few times after your main sets and you will get used to it easy. Then on the day you want to squat the 455,unrack the 5 plates again, walk back etc. Then drop the weight to 455 and go to work, your mental block should be over.Im the same way,you get to a new weight in the rack and it feels like a fucking car on your back. This method has worked for me and quite a few guys in my gym.

#2, do box squats.Getting out of the hole is the main problem for most of us.You can get alot of info in the PL forum on this board as you know.Hopefully BigByrd will chime in here.Westside methods are the way to go for big PL lifts.

I love to squat now.I used to hate it,but now I look forward to squat day every week.Good thread Szona and good work, makes me want to get in the cage right now!

Yeah there is a definite mental barrier... Very difficult for me to get under the bar due to a shoulder injury (torn labrum) I have very limited mobility in my left shoulder, so I basically have to get the bar in the right groove and place my arms straight out so my hands are on the plates. Always feels like it is going to slip, and then its...bye bye to whats left of my shoulder. Everything felt right today though, so I went for it. Didn't feel bad at all...could have went heavier or hit a few more reps. Next time I will get a spotter.

TP - Baldnazi had some great suggestions, but in addition I'd say just load up two 10's and a 5 on each side - smaller weights are sometimes less intimidating, then once your realize you can do the weight, go to the quarters.

Thanx guys, all great advice i will definatly try. Now a quick question... would i do the walk outs on back day? When i unrack heavy ass weight i feel every muscle in my back crunch up and flex like a mofo. Could i use this on back day at some point?

Wojo your right, i always try to jump from 405 to 455 when i should be goin for 415 or 425. I guess you get used to jumpin 50lbs a clip when using legs, you sometimes forget small incriments are the way to go. You made me realize i been doing this alot latly, and i need to train smarter.

Again, thanx everyone!

GREAT JOB, SAM!

I AM GLAD YOU DID THAT! VERY COOL.....FOR MY BODYWEIGHT I AM NOT THAT STRONG.....MY BEST SQUAT WITH 500 LBS IS SEVEN GOOD ONES. I DID 600LBS AT A MEET FOR A SINGLE. BUT...I WEIGHED 275-280 WHEN I DID THAT.

I BLEW MY TENSOR FACIA LATA...THAT MUSLCE UP HIGH ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY RIGHT HIP THE LAST TIME I HAD 500 ON THE BAR....I'D BEEN DOING A BUNCH OF CARDIO AND MY BODY COULDN'T TAKE IT.....STUPID....BUT I'VE BEEN SCARED TO PUT THAT MUCH ON SINCE I HURT MYSELF. THE HIGHEST IVE GONE N A COUPLE YEARS IS 410LBS...

I AM GLAD YOU ARE KICKING ASS! [PHIL'S RIGHT A LOT...DAMB, DAMB, DAMB!]LOL...:D

Nice work Sam .......I am glad to hea you could enjoy putting 500 lbs on your back and squating up and down with it 10 times ............only sick demented bber could enjoy something like that ..........lol.............great job .........And if it matters, I agree with Phil as well ...........Phil ...make him take his squats to the hole dont you think ? Wont that give a thicker look to his leg , because of maxing Ham development ? If Sam gets those wheels just a tad thicker .......and maybe makes just a few other small improvements ...........he will be hard to beat .......great physique to go with his awesome character ....

Bald nazi .......great addvice my brother .........I love seeing you guys helping each other ............I love to see the way has been going as of late .......Jason good advice as well..............TP ......try what the boys suggested as well

My old favorite technique for getting past mental barriers ......is an old Paul Anderson techique ......Start with doing quarters in the cage with a very heavy weight .........and then week by week you slowly lower the pins until you are in the hole ..............I have seen guys increase there strength 100 lbs [ including myself ] in 3 months or so ] .........if you need any details let me know and i will chime back in ........but it works and slowly takes the fear factor away .......you are safe in the cage , and as you get stronger , you gradually take it deeper .........slowly , but surely as the weeks pass you are in the hole with a much heavier weight than ever .....

Good Job on the 500.

That mental block can be a bitch. A powerlifter had me do walk outs with heavier weights than I could squat to get rid of that block. It pushed me past any weight I had previously lifted.

Take care of that shoulder.

Something I did was took a wider stance instead of a narrow one. From a very early age I was taught to go ass to the ground. Another thing I used to do when squating heavy was do anything over 500 in a cage. Pretty much all you have to do is un-rack and step back. I was also able to push myself more because if I failed the bars caught me every time. Just my imput.

Way to go!! You mean to tell me you actually listen to that weirdo Phil Hernon? :D

I am not one of those guys that can sit on the floor while squatting, but I normally do go pretty deep (well below parallel)....just wasn't to sure what was going to happen with this weight. Sometimes I even sit in the hole for a 5 or 10 count. Its frustrating because its more my leg shape than leg size...they dont measure small... its just that outer sweep of the Vastus Lateralis that is lacking. I have been rotating my heavy basic movements.... one workout its heavy back squats, next its heavy front squats, next heavy press or hack. Something has got to happen.... right?
