Any ideas on 'alternative' leg training?

This is a humbling question to ask, considering quads have always been one of my best bodyparts. My right knee is shot, likely from 20 years of heavy leg training. Squats, leg presses, lunges, and split squats are killing me...I just can't do them on a regular basis anymore.

I can probably pull out a marathon squat session (eg - 100 rep rest pause set w/ 225) every few weeks, but I'm at the point where I need to find some alternatives - sprints, stairs, etc.

I've had issues in the past where I've had to back off of heavy leg training for a few months and was at least able to maintain my quads with low gear biking, and stationary bike and stepper set on the highest setting. I'd prefer to continue making progress, instead of just maintaining the status quo of my leg development.

Any ideas? Help this broken down horse out!

PROLOTHERAPY

Look into prolotherapy for your knee. Here's a good link:

as someone with a bad lower back, I am also limited as to what leg exercises I can perform safely, I would also love to hear some alternative ways to work legs. I hate that I feel sometimes like I neglect them because I dont do any type of squat movement.

Depending on what's "shot" about it, will determine what you can do.

sled pulling, forward, backwards, could help maintain some.

tke's with bands, several angles could help as well. talk to your DO, see what movements are ok.. a good PT could help too.

Good luck!

sprints up hills works but you have to be in shape for it to be effective.
