Dad just got diagnosed with prostate cancer

Prostate removal can be an extremely brutal surgery with quite bad aftereffects. Unless you have a really severe case it's not first line treatment.
Not only that..but the prostate cancer can come back..the top doctors in the world are telling you to keep the prostate and treat it

🙏

My dad got prostate cancer 8 years ago. He did this new procedure where they use a laser to remove the cancer. I believe he told me it was called a “reem job”. He had to go every morning to get laser surgery for 3 months straight to get rid of the cancer. He had to take medication to chemically castrate himself for 3 years. He is perfectly healthy now. His natural testosterone has come back. His general practitioner is very anti testosterone supplementation. I don’t push it on him but I know he gets tempted because he was very strong physically and he is frustrated by being weaker. His PSA is great now and everything looks good. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 75. He’s now 83. I believe he was treated at Loma Linda University in California.

Last April it was a year since I lost my Dad, He passed at 83 years of age. He was diagnosed at 65-67 years of ago (cant remember the exact time). He did not have his removed and monitored instead. He had a stroke in April '23 then another in April '24 which took his life. At the time of his death the cancer had metastised, although the cancer did not get him I think it was going to start causing some problems sooner rather than later, however that is nearing 20 odd years since diagnosis.

A collegue I used to work with was diagnosed last year, believe he was 69 years old. He opted to have brachytherapy, his PSA is now 0.01

When a loved one gets cancer its frightning, I wish you and your family well. Its always a reminder how fragile life is and to spend as much time as we can with our loved ones as we never know what is around the corner.

Guys, thank you all so much for the comments, messages, support, insights etc. I am genuinely and truly appreciative of the support you all have given me / us, especially considering none of you know me at all, and I am not really a helpful contributor around here., It actually means a lot more than you could possibly know. Thank you. I will be responding to all the PM's shortly. We are delving into the resource and information world for all of this, that said, there are A LOT of misconceptions out there, and I am grateful for the insights from the members that have highlighted those, and help us become more aware of that. Will update as we know more for anyone that cares.

Swirling emotions here on both our parts.

We know nothing, we don't know shit about fuck.

The doctor is a douche, acted like he could give a fuck. Biopsy was 11 days ago, told results would be available after 3 days. Finally got some results and resolution today, after our own persistence with the office. Gave him a book recommendation, scheduled a follow up, said, "yeah you can either have the removal or radiation, there are pros and cons to both. See you in a month." Said his numbers were borderline mild to moderate.

Anyone have any experience with anything here than can make the mountain seem a little bit more climbable?

I am angry, but calmed myself from putting a knife through someone's throat

p.s. of course the doc is fat piece of dogshit that has never even seen the inside of a gym. Guy is built like a bag of wet microwaved bagels that I slammed against a tree stump.

EDIT: apologies for a bit of an emotional post, I didn't search,. I just came here to post / vent. This, at least for me personally, is a safe community for posting sharing if that makes sense. Not a lot more of them exist any more these days. Genuine thanks to anyone that reads or comments, and no love lost if no one does.
There is a treatment to consider that is much safer the the 2 options you mentioned.
Your dads "Gleason score" is very important, more so than the PSA test score, and that is derived from the nasty biopsy. If the Gleason score is not too aggressive, first # is LOWER than the second #, and the location of the cancer in the prostate, he MAY be able to have HIFU treatment done. With this treatment there is NO radiation , not chemo and is by far the least damaging though painful in the area where insertion is made.

Apparently, as cancer feeds off of glucose and glutamine, going zerocarb/or even full carnivore has anectodal experiences of stopping the growth and even reversing it.
While cancer does feed off glucose, it is important to remember that our body always makes glucose when it needs to. So going 0 carb will not eliminate glucose, it will however prevent glucose spikes that are caused by high carb/sugar diets, so there is a benefit.
