Just wondering what the difference is between dextrose and maltodextrin and which is more effective to take post-workout
Wolfpack said:I think maltodextrin is a complex carb, even though it's broken down and absorbed rapidly. Dextrose is a simple carb and helps spike insulin levels. You could take both post-workout together.

RicPhoenix said:Whoever said that maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate is correct. Maltodextrin is a chain of glucose ...dextrose is one single glucose molecule.
Dextrose = glucose
maltodextrin = many glucose units linked (can vary in length depending on the use of the maltodex.)
The newest carbohydrate product out there is Vitargo...and like edge250 stated ...you should be looking into that.

Dextrose is much more sweeter than dextrose. Dextrose can also be purchased for much cheaper than Maltodextrin, but I doubt you'd be able to take the taste of 50 grams of Dextrose as opposed to Maltodextrin.
Maltodextrin is harder to mix than Dextrose.
Maltodextrin must be purchased in large quantities if you want a discount, other wise you'll be spending about 1.5 - 2 bucks a pound if you buy it at a store.
Vitargo sounds good, but it's some sort of mystery carbohydrate whose molecular structure sounds more complex then simple, but somehow increases insulin better than anything else out there (according to it's label). Though I'm not willing to spend 30 bucks for 4 pounds to find out. It also contains creatine, so I'm not sure it would be too useful for straight carbohydrate loading purposes.
Thus, if you want to go with something that is super sweet and will spike insulin easy, go for dextrose.
If you want to add more carbs and minimal (but still present) flavoring post workout, then stick with Maltodextrin.

RicPhoenix said:Vitargo is the trade name for a waxy barley starch. Starch is composed of amylose and amylopectin...each are just different configurations of glucose molecules linked together. If a starch is made up of mainly amylopectin(?) it is called waxy and has different physical and biological properties than would a normal blend. Vitargo is backed by peer reviewed research which shows it is more effective for carb loading that maltodextrin/glucose drinks.
