Max-OT training was ahead of its time!

I think you could use the identical MAX-OT principles, but up the rep range and have very good results. It checks all the boxes of mechanical tension, adequate volume and progressive overload. Keep in mind, the studies about hypertrophy being posted TODAY back what this program was preaching 2+decades ago. Almost point for point. That is why I feel this dude was a pioneer. The program is posted free online and if you read his methodology, it has now been proven to be true, albeit decades later.
 
I think once you train over many years and you're experimental it becomes common sense what is effective. We all want to find the optimal way but too many get lost in the details. Guys like details and they become routine and often it's hard for them to think differently until something bad happens. I think this system posted is a great general guildline for success but as posted different rep ranges suit different people. I believe a variety of rep ranges are optimal. Now for some especially as they get older (or incur certain injuries) they need to avoid lower reps for certain movements or even entirely.

An area many forget about when it comes to training is simply the enjoyment aspect as well. I am all for following a fixed routine and changing things very infrequently but I also like to have fun in the gym and if I stuck to 6-8 reps for everything that would be less fun for me. I have trained P/P/L for years and do the same movements over and over but it's nice to randomly throw is a 25+ rep leg press set from time to time.

Me personally I like more volume but if you train 100% and are locked in 45 mins is more than enough. I use lower reps (4-6) but most movements are 8-12 and at times that is doubled. All the new literature shows pretty much all rep ranges are just as effective as long as you go to complete failure. In fact for the heavier low rep loads even stopping just short of complete failure might be optimal. Incorporating all rep ranges (essentially 4-30 reps) is very beneficial for many different reasons for me. I don't follow a routine (low, med, high etc) but I listen to my body and I encourage others do the same.
 
Just came across this looks like he's still running max ot low volume high intensity at 59. Looks great at 59, surprised he hasn't changed his style and stayed injury free that's impressive

Honestly I train the same way but with a bit more time off and higher rep range.. its still a very sensible way to go
 
I spent my early years when i was natural doing something similar but 5-8 reps and a few more sets. packed on a good deal of muscle. Worked pretty well when i was un-natural too.
 
I remember i had an amazing progress in chest doing once per week following routines
6x6 30 degree incline barbell press following by 2sets of 8 reps of incline fly dumbells. Nothing else just those two exercises. In general I was always my biggest when i was using biggest weights with lower rep range and low volume.
 
Worked great for size and strength for me 20+ years ago. Not against trying it again i would just increase reps for isolation exercises to 6-8 reps.
 
I did Max-OT and loved it back in the early 2000s. Works great. I'd periodize it now. 4-6 wks of 8-10 reps, then, 4-6 wks of 4-6 reps.

Good to see Skip still going hard. I remember back in the day, he, along with Mike Ashley claimed to be natty. Curious if he runs TRT. I must be doing something right if he is known for always going heavy, being I use considerably more weight than he does on most of those exercises and I'll be 61 in a few months. Certainly not fair though being I'm bigger than him. Thx for the vid. :)

That's pretty ridiculous because on the videos, and I'm not kidding about this at all, he constantly refers to himself as a 'professional drug user'.
 
All this Max-OT talk....got me asking myself if I do another run with that or DC/Dorian approach. Kinda wish we could get all the guys and gals on this site to one big party once a year in the U.S. So many interesting people to meet and conversations to be had.
 
This is how I still train after I bought all of Skips books years ago, except I do higher rep ranges 12-15 reps now. Basically a push/pull/legs split six days a week with Sundays off. I'll pick 3-5 exercises per muscle group, do 1-2 sets a muscle group, with 12-15 reps.

How's the 6 days treating you recovery wise? I've always been a 5 day guy but plan on doing a 6 day max ot type split. Basically the OG one but splitting quads and hams into their own days
 
I recover much faster doing higher reps even if its closer to failure, than heavy reps. I like to split my hams/quads as well. Sometimes I'll do hams in the morning and quads in the evening. Or chest in the morning and shoulders triceps in the evening. As long as Im eating and sleeping I'm good.

I've seen some of the "evidence based" lol guys say higher reps are more fatiguing in the past but recently saw one of the researcher's speculate that higher reps are less fatiguing which to me makes more sense. Love the username btw, my views exactly 💯
 
Reading rothbard really woke me up to government.

I've started to ignore the evidence based trainers. I know I know science. But sometimes my 30 years of experience contradicts what they say. I look way better using higher reps now.
