Probably wouldn't care here in Japan either, but in every other case I'd rather deal with the law in the US than Japan.

Here they can hold you without charges for up to 10 days. No lawyers, no nothing. You a passenger in a car with a drunk driver? That's a $5,000 fine. Someone steal your car and hit someone? Its your fault. Foreigner out at night in Tokyo? Wouldn't you like to show us policemen your Alien registration card and come down to the station and piss in a cup for us? Note, none of this has happened to me, but to people I know. I make sure to be a good boy.

A guy was with his wife having dinner in a restaurant... religious police came in just to "check up" on the customers of the restaurant...they saw a man alone with a woman... and asked "give us proof you're married to this woman"... he told them how can i give you proof when the only proof i have is my family card, and it's around 10X4 inches big! do you want me to carry it in my pocket? they got into an arguement and the 350 lb "religious enforcer" broke the leg of the chair and smashed it on his head causing internal bleed which lead to death...
all he got was a slap on the wrist.
I was once stopped by the saudi passport officer from my way back from kuwait with my wife.. he asked me for proof that she's my wife... i said "well, here's my passport, here's her passport, now go check in your system." he said "we don't have a system like that"... I had to spend an hour trying to convince someone with an IQ level of a rock how that is plain old retarded and he has no right to ask for "Proof" if there's no system.

that's just a little example... the biggest fuck up is sentencing in courts... it totally depends on the judge... it could be "go run ten laps" or "cut off his leg"... depending on his mood.

so, be thankful for the laws you have in the states...

The problem is... there's nothing we could do about it... I would say that 90% of people under the age of 40 want to dismantle the religious police because in 70 years of existance, they have done nothing but ruin this country. the problem is... the government wants to please the masses (religious people) and give them a false sense of "safety".
Basically, most of the employees of the "religious police" are ex-cons/druggies who "repented", grew a beard, and memorized the quran... nothing more nothing less... I have met some good officers, but that's like 1% of them...
my uncle (very religious... i'm talking ZZ top beard here) joined them for a couple of weeks... then he resigned... we asked him why and he said "the prophet said either say something good, or don't say anything at all... so i'm just gonna shut up"...

but hey, thank god my wife has an american passport ... those guys are scared shitless when ever they see that dark blue little book ... they embassy basically told them that if they ever touch an american, they'd burn their asses. so, if a problem can't be solve with reasoning (you can't reason with monkeys), it can be solved in other ways.

I have a friend in Roppongi and I hang out with him a lot. He's from Europe and has been here 19 years. From him I learned to avoid conflicts in any manner possible - you as a gaijin will always lose.

I had a business trip and actually took the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka at 9:20AM on Thursday. I think I got out of Tokyo about 30 minutes before JR East shut everything down. By the skin of my proverbial teeth. You around Tokyo? PM me...

In regards to laws, the thing about Japan is that they seem to be in the 21st century with the US and Europe, but under the surface its still the 16th century...especially as I have to worry about - in regards to family law.
