Weird questions for non competitors who stay very lean year round

We are bodybuilders, not powerlifters. Bodybuilding is about staying lean and vascular year round. When you gain too much body fat, you lose your vascularity, you lose your muscle definition and you can get an extended gut. This means you no longer look like a bodybuilder! Many guys bulk up after a show and no longer look like bodybuilders until they diet down for the next show. What good is that? You should want to look like a bodybuilder year round. And as already stated, everything works better when your lean and you’ll live longer. BULKING UP IS NOT SMART, ESPECIALLY AS YOU GET OLDER!!!

I can sign the last sentence with both hands and even feet.

My given career field reputation and appearance is everything - I am an old guy for where I work, if I do not look the part in instantly takes away from my credibility
I’m right with you on this. In my eyes I HAVE to look the part to command respect which it does and makes a huge difference in public and with my coworkers. And the quiet type and treat everyone with respect, but when I do speak at my job, people listen. I have to attribute that to my appearance, attitude, and years of service.

I'll sign it with my cock too. I was a failure at getting huge for many reasons. But being smaller and leaner all year I'm good at. If someone can control hunger and maintain energy, libido, sanity... staying lean year round is easy.

we think the same way; and even if I wanted to go crazy and gain weight, even if I try hard to eat a lot my body has a metabolism that keeps me in good condition all year round

I don't want to offend anyone but sometimes it seems to me that people start to indulge in fantasy when it comes to ego... honestly I have never felt better than others just because I am bigger on the contrary I often think that it had a negative impact on me

Pretty sure you posted before that's your girl in your avi right? Just be glad she digs. Lol my girl just tell me how gross I look when I get Lean. As for the original question I get really lean mid summer because I worked seven days a week for years and years. I do over head jackhammering Monday through Friday. Then I use to work for a guy and do commercial lawn care on the weekends with some huge properties. Wasn't paid by the hour so I'd jog through pushing a spreader. Most would be surprised how much resistance 50-70lbs of fertilzer has in a place like Pgh where everything is a hill. According to my phone my one route I walked 14 miles. On top of that my girl likes to hike so in the summer I'll come home and eat then go hike up to 14 miles but usually shorter. As for the guy getting free desserts ha I never had that happen. Guys at work comment and people in the bar where my girl used to work. Last summer a guy asked me how I got so Lean. Lol but yeah never anything free. I was the fattest I've been just a bit ago when I fell off the wagon. Usually drink light beer. Was drinking 5-6 24oz reds hard apple a day. Shit must be loaded with calories. Ha. Plus being laid off for four months. Back to work now and leaving out like normal again. Just rambling heee obviously but yeah my girl comments the most and it's how my face looks horrible and it's gross. Haha I personally can't wait to get there again this summer. She still bangs me so she must not care that much. Lol

This is me year round. I'd like to say it's because I'm focused and driven but that's just not true. All genetics. A lot of guys who stay lean. Its just what's in the cards for them, they're not even trying to.

For me it’s unwanted attention. Some guys love it, but I’m the guy who just wants to be left alone when I am in public.

The thing that cracks me up the most about this subject is that how literally everyone “used to be a bodybuilder” who strikes up a convo with you when you’re jacked and ripped. 😂 Guess we all have different definitions of what that means.
Dude I've had so many old guys tell me they used to look like me when they were younger. I just go along with it lol

Another ageless classic 😂

A lot of it is purely accidental I feel..when you set a calorie number and a protein number..there really isn’t room for anything else

I realize this is a bump of a thread from over a year ago, but it's a great read.

Are any of you guys that are under 10% bodyfat year-round still making gains in muscular size from year-to-year? And if so, doing what? Just 200cal surpluses at a time? How do you structure that personally.

I feel like it's not possible to keep gaining size from staying lean year-round once you're 2-3 years into bodybuilding.

Why do you feel you can’t gain size and stay lean year round after 2-3 years?

it’s entirely possible to be in a calorie surplus and not turn into a fat ass. The amount of the surplus, the diet, and the compounds used will determine the amount of fat gain (if any) , and in some cases people even recomp and add tissue while losing fat.

So if you're going to start right after a competition (say 4-5%) your bulking period is going to be presumably very short-lived if you're maxing out at around 10% would it not? I keep overthinking this is circles and for whatever reason (probably mistakenly) end up thinking that you can't gain much of any muscle year-to-year without pushing up to closer to 12-15% or so.

Was looking for a more detailed approach on how others bulk while staying under 10% and still make progress... For example, what if they aren't even starting at 4% but at 8% as then the bulking window would be even shorter...

When I mean very lean I’m talking sub 12% bf more closer to 8%

If you’re not competing, what is it that drives or motivates you to stay lean year round? More specifically for guys who are not genetically predisposed to being lean and or love junk food. What makes that sacrifice worth it for you?

Is it for vanity purposes? Do you notice general public and peers treat you differently now that you’re jacked and shredded? There’s a saying can’t remember where but it goes, “Nothing tastes as good as looking good.” I think lol

Of course most guys can take steroids, lift hard and get big living comfortably probably around 15% bf. But getting jacked and shredded is a completely different game that requires more discipline.

So if you’re not competing or making a living off of your physique why go the extra mile to live a strict disciplined lifestyle?
I used to be morbidly obese, am covered in scars and loose skin, and am incredibly vain. So I stay lean year round, and even when I’m trying to build muscle, as soon as I start seeing definition disappear, I immediately cut. I’m working at getting to be more comfortable with that. That’s part of the reason I’m on this board, to learn and try and become more comfortable with my self image as I try to improve.

I’m pretty sure I have body dysmorphia to a good degree. I’m usually anywhere near 10-12% bf, and have dropped down to 8% or so at 187#, 5’8”

3-10mg tirz per week or as needed.
Minimal amounts of AAS
Very high protein
Already have a base from almost 40 years of lifting.
So I can get away with full body workouts with just 65lbs on the 45lb bar.

3 circuits every afternoon...

each circuit is:

30 reps squats(DEEP - thanks to tirz inflammation and pain reduction.. almost non-existent.. pump city)
20 reps overhead presses
20 reps curls

3 Mile run EOD
3 Mile walk the next day after running.

every morning

3 mile walk
50 chins
100 pushups

6 miles total each day of 'cardio'
