Best training System

Ok heres what im thinking.....there are a ton of different ways someone can train. what i use is different than what lets say Drob uses, verses what pesty uses. id like to see how everyones opinions on ways to train differ. please explain the principles you use to design a program, why you believe thats the best way to do it, and what FACTS about muscle building you believe are being applied in your particular program.

Lets have a grown up debate about this, i dont want it to turn into a pissing contest.

I just do whatever my trainer suggests now. BUT with any program i feel the most important aspects are consistency and patience. Its very frustrating to see people try a program for 3 weeks and say it didnt work. If you are going to try a new method you should do it for at least 3 months before making any major tweaks or giving up on it.

I truely believe DOGGCRAPP said it best.

The best training method is one you 120% believe in, that allows you to progress. If you dont entirely believe in what youre doing...what's the point? Youll just end up wasting your time thinking of greener grass.

Consistency is key...you should be looking for 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2..etc over a long period of time instead of 10+10.

....I dunno it was said something along those lines.

I believe that all training systems have their time and place. I don't think you can stay on one training system indefinitely. Once youe start seeing diminishing returns, switch it up. I like to plan out year round training cycles (mainly because i'm a strength coach and thats what i do for my athletes). I usually stay on one training cycle for around 3 to 4 months. That allows me to get in 3 or 4 different training cycles a year. Same as sports: preseason, inseason, post season, and off season. I'll switch it up from 5x5 to a more bodybuilding type and even go through a whole olympic style training system. I see results with each training system and once the results stop coming I switch it to a new training system. The body has one goal when it comes to training: adapt to survive. Once it has adapted to a training stimulus, its time to throw it a curveball. Thats my opinion.

Thats interresting. do you think there needs to be 3 or 4 different programs, or woulod toggeling between 2 be just as sufficient?

I think the only effective way to train is trial and error. Try something see if it works... if it does keep it, if it doesn't loose it. Maybe use 5x5 or DC as a guideline on certain goals.. but I think everyone is different and how they grow or respond to something can only be learned over time by listening to your body. I just train instinctively and switch it up every so often. I think consistently trying new things and listening to what works and what doesn't is the only way to go. Then you can form your own manual and what to do.

Well that depends on what context you are looking at. With athletics you need to have 4 different training cycles. Off season should be focussed towards strength, power, and speed improvements. Pre season should still be focussed on strength and speed improvements with the addition of athletic skill improvement and conditioning. In season should be focussed around the maintenance of strength and speed with the addition of recovery methods to recover between games or matches. Post season should be focussed around CNS recovery with the addition of preparing the body for the off season workouts. Then you start it over again with off season.

As far as bodybuilding and recreational weightlifting is concerned you could rotate between 2 or 3 different training cycles. Possibly a strength cycle then a more hypertrophy type cycle then you could just rotate to a combination of both. If you are a competitor then you could easily do a off season, pre contest, and post contest type training program

With DC you are switching up when you stop progressing on an exercise, so thats a different stimulus for the muscle being trained. From what i've learned it doesn't have to be a huge drastic change.

I've been training for almost 20 years now and have trained amost everyway possiable (I think???) But, I have found almost everyway works for awhile then I have to switch things up...for me, and this is my body...I seem to do really good with high intensity routines for about 6-8 weeks (think DC, static, RP,ect) or (Mentzer, forced reps, negatives) but after that point im overtrained...Honestly I think I do better with a system that I can just progressivly get stronger on lower volume, but progressive adding weight each week, and keeping my reps on the lower rep ranges (6-10) except for legs and delts (for me grow better on higher reps 15+)

Now this past week im starting with Phil Hernon's system and so far I really like it, it is very different from the past systmes (kinda) and its something I have been thinking about trying for a long time...(hitting each bodypart 2x week) Most of the time when I have tried to hit bodyparts 2 x a week, I overtrained very fast..But with my new diet and LBA's I hope this works out better for me...We will see, and Im sure Phil and I will figure it out...

chris

wow lets see what i believe training wise?? hmm well you can easily get bigger by becoming brutally strong, I have listened to DC's method of madness for some time now and a lot of what he says just makes damn good sense to me. howevever exploring the ideas of fascia stretching (through extreme stretching and extreme blood volume) has really sparked an intrest in me so I am currently incorporting both methods into my workout, and having the most productive workout of my career thus far, all while remaining "clark kent" for now.

b-boy and chris awesome posts. i train with phil and honestly its not that different than dc, at least in principle. is anyone else starting to see a trend here though. the best in the business might have a few different programs that they put together but its the same basic idea that gets you the results. im starting to think that certain training styles are going to go the way of the dinosaur. we have guys like dante and phil that cut all the bullshit out of it. now im not trying to knock other training methods, im just saysing the ones around now that seem to produse the best results all have a common thread.

training methods

I started training at age 12 I'm now 47 have used many methods. I was reluctant to try DC style because thought it would be to taxing for my joints. I have found it to be the most productive style I have ever used, I think with the lower volume it is actully less stressful on my joints. I am also using kettlebells a little just for some conditioning and to mix it up a bit, has a unique feel to it. Many thanks to DC.

hey guys i like the way this thread is going but lets get into alittle more detail with the principles these programs utulize, i think that with enough imput it can be a great learning tool for everyone, after i talk to phil ill put in my 2 cents.

I am doing the power/reprange/shock training that eric bosner came up with. IT seems to be really working for me, If you havent read about it yet check it out. I also incorporate DC stretching movments after each bodypart. and do yoga stretching a couple times a week.
