Anyone use metformin on a lean bulk alongside hormones to avoid fat gain ??

I'm a bottomless pit and can eat all day , thinking metformin may help with shuttling of nutrients and possibly lower my appetite a bit

Anyone rate this ? And what dosage

I see John meadows uses it year round and that guy is a genius and always looks paper thin skinned

Yes, plenty do and plenty of threads discussing this.

Does metformin actually help with nutrient shuttling?

Depends how you want to define nutrient shuttling. It improves absorption throughout your intestinal tract, but if you want to extrapolate further to partitioning it’s hard to say.

So in theory you should have very full muscles on metformin?

in theory..

but it also reduces the amount of carbs that your body absorbs..

I decided against using it, as I feel it makes me feel weak and more tired.

IIRC, it lowers your B12 and CoQ10

It doesn’t help carbohydrate absorption. It’s not insulin. In a very basic way of explaining it is more likely to block carbohydrate absorption. Hence the stomach issues that some have with it.

Me personally in an off season phase I can’t use it...it decreases my appetite so much that after 3-4 days after dropping it my appetite improves immensely. Also in an off season if using it makes me flatter (carbs not being absorbed properly) and the same...couple days after dropping fullness returns. I can use it when dieting when food is low without issue.

I do like it for all the other benefits and will def use post bodybuilding.

yes.

IIRC, it increases insulin sensitivity in the muscle by decreasing carb absorption, and thus decreasing insulin release.

could achieve similar (if not better results) by just training without pre and peri carbs, and just having carbs with post-workout shake IMO

Yes and no. Too complicated of a drug.

Take it away from your carbs if possible.

I have taken it before bed (500mg and 1000mg both regular and extended) and no matter when I take metformin, during off season phase, it’s kills my fullness and appetite

Met definitely causes GI distress but I was under the impression it works in the liver... Not like a carb "blocker" that doesn't allow you to digest carbs.

john you would want to take a good GDA that has a good dose of berberine in it, it would work great for you especially with how lean you stay, you could really push the carbs!!

This just reinforces for me metformin isn’t for bodybuilding.
For longevity perhaps.

While this is not incorrect, it is not metformin's main mechanism of action.

It activates AMPK in both liver and skeletal muscle (AMPK activates mTOR as well, in turn decreasing protein synthesis, which is why many bodybuilders think metformin inhibits muscle-building; however, anecdotal evidence by many shows this not to be significant).

In the liver, this decreases production of glucose (lowering overall glucose levels in the blood). In muscle, this causes increased GLUT4 production, resulting in better glucose uptake by the cells.

So to cap:

(main) Decreased liver production of glucose
(main) Increased muscle uptake of glucose
(minor) Decreased intestinal absorption of glucose (common result = GI sides when starting)

FWIW, evidence is emerging that it has potent anti-tumor and anti-aging benefits as well and new research is being conducted on how and how much it does these things.
