Lol... However it's amazing at how much control they had over their rib cage at that time... you don't see that type of control anymore.

One word to describe that pose. Bizarre lol

maybe it suits a certain crowd in the gfp market...
especially if he is lactating as well...

I believe that's the "someone told me i had a great ribcage for bodybuilding pose"

the vacuum

That's a side shot of a "tweaked" vacuum pose.... used to be BIG in early bodybuilding but typically from a front, hands behind head pose to show abdominal (transverse abdominis specifically) control.

I haven't done it in a long time, but it's actually a VERY good exercise to practice to decrease waist size as the transverse abdominal muscle PULLS IN in a horizontal fashion, much like a corset.

I'm too lazy to google images right now but it's worth looking at.

this is how u start practicing vacuum pose

I prefer the "suck in skinny guys of the 70's" to the "bloated gut" BBers of today.

Breathing Squats...90% of the young guys have no idea what they are and what they were used for but the picture tells the story.

Yup. The BB pioneers did high rep squats for legs, but also because of the intense breathing, they claimed it also expanded the rib cage.

I dont think those guys would be fans of the so called "GH" gut.

That's a side vacuum pose which I'm quite sure none of the current pro bodybuilders can replicate. Way too much abdominal protrusion, too great a stomach size and who knows organ growth to do them.

Let's see... That's Dr. Ellington Darden doing a classic bodybuilding pose. Dr. Darden won the Collegiate Mr. America, IIRC. To the extent of my knowledge, Dr. Darden was 100% natural (I'm confused about that lactating comment in the beginning of the thread). Those of you making fun of him for performing this pose are exposing yourselves as ignorant of bodybuilding history in general and classic bodybuilding in particular.

Here is what Dr. Darden has to say about rib cage expansion: Dr. Darden's H.I.T.

Bump this! I always love to bury young guys in the gym with them :D

Is there some type of soft tissue attaching to the ribs that can be expanded? Somehow I don't see how you could make your ribcage bigger by heavy breathing or pullovers. There should be some soft tissue that is affected or else the ribs would actually be deformed as a result, no? Same with the shoulder widening techniques - what is being stretched (if it works)?

I did a lot of those super-sets starting out, and while I don't have the smallest ribcage it isn't huge either. :D

There is rib cartilage between the ribs and the sternum. It's more flexible than ribs obviously but whether it can really be stretched permanently I do not know. Personally I doubt it (wouldn't be too safe neither would it) and that is also what a thoracic surgeon will tell you.

What is mostly happening in that picture is Darden's ability to hyperextend his spine, along with a genetically big rib cage.

Btw Killerstack: shoulder widening? What do you supposedly have to do to accomplish that? Dislocate and pull back in several times a year or some other quack idea:confused:
