depends on how new or advanced tou are, if you read gavins articles on hardcore bulking it is all pretty well explained there.. some can gain fine on 500mg a week but get gyno, others can run 1500-2000mg a week and not have to use any anti e's (iron addict) your body will tell you!
you can sit here and listen to everyones personal experience but it is a waste of time imo, sometimes you have ot be the ginnie pig, up your dose from 250 mg every few weeks and see when you start really growing and when the sides really manifest themselves, now side effects are very broad too... are you speaking of gyno and water retention? or high blood pressure, cholesterol, and other levels you cant see in the mirror?
