I know a guy who hiked the Appalachian trail and the same thing happened to him. Super depleted all over but with great legs. He was a super skinny to start with.One example is my wife (no bodybuilder) who hiked from Mexico to Canada . . . solo.

Could not carry enough calories. Impossible. Walked about 20 miles a day. Did this for months and months. I measured her legs before she left. After thousands of miles burning calories like a furnace, her legs grew while other parts shrank.
